Amazon Office Chairs

There are three main types of office chairs on the market: task chairs, mid-back chairs, and executive office chairs. Task chairs are small, simple and often armless. Mid-back chairs are larger, have arms, and offer more back support. Executive chairs are the highest quality and provide full back support.

Good ergonomics are not inherently expensive, and expensive does not necessarily guarantee good ergonomics. The basic principles that have guided chair design for the past several decades have to some extent trickled down to the lesser chairs of the world. You could find a chair that makes good ergonomic sense for you at the office-supply store down the street, but it is less likely, and many big-box-store chairs have limited adjustability. All of the experts we talked to at length agreed that, for people who can afford it, investing in a high-end office chair is a better bet. As Alan Hedge of Cornell told us, “There’s the old saying ‘You get what you pay for.’ That’s very true in chairs.”

The Aeron by Herman Miller is considered by most to be the cadillac of the office chair world. Highly innovative, the chair utilizes a woven suspension membrane that eliminates pressure points by distributing weight evenly. The seat has a “waterfall” edge which  takes the pressure off the back of your thighs. Plus, the chair comes with a 12-year warranty. Amazon reviewers gave this the highest rating of our mid-back office chairs at 4.4 out of 5 stars.

The HVL210 gives you the most comfort and versatility for the price. The chair has features usually not seen in task chairs, like center-tilt control and adjustable tension. The seat and back are both contoured and have comfortable double layered cushions. While some assembly is required the majority of Amazon reviewers say it is easy to put together. Also, Amazon reviewers give the HVL210  4.3 stars out of 5 with over 560 reviewers contributing.

With a suspended mesh back and adjustable lumbar support for the lower back, this chair can be sat in for 8 hours or more per day. Of the nearly 40 reviews on Amazon, not a single user reported any broken parts or hardware issues. Plus, Amazon reviewers who likes this product ranged from a 5’4’’ woman to 6’4”, 250lbs man.

Rani Lueder recommends testing out a new chair for at least 30 minutes, in the type of setting you’d be using it in at home or in the office. That last part is crucial. Ideally, you’ll want to bring your laptop to Design Within Reach or some other dealer, zero in on a few contenders, pull ’em up to a desk, and knock out a few emails. Yes, doing this requires a bit more of an effort than sorting Amazon search results or driving down the street to Office Max and settling on the first seat that seems like a decent fit, but when you’re talking about a product that could well be in your life longer than your current pet or significant other, an afternoon of butt testing seems prudent.

The Boss Task Seat is a good Budget option. With a relatively small seat and backrest, this chair is perfect for cramped spaces. Many Amazon reviewers said they liked this chair because it was able to be slid under a desk if needed. Amazon reviewers also noted how easily this chair is assembled. While most reviewers said that they were pleasantly surprised by how well this chair holds up given it’s price, others noted that height-adjustment mechanism is not as strong and occasionally fails. Still, it has maintained a 4.2 out of 5 stars after over 200 reviews.

Another concern: After having spent the previous few months sitting in the best task chairs money can buy, we could immediately detect differences in comfort. The Markus’s leather-covered seat pad was the least forgiving among the chairs we tested, its hard foam offering considerably less cushion than the Gesture’s softer foam pad or the Embody’s crazy pixel-matrix one. Testers noticed the hardness less and less as the days went on, but reported more frequent urges to wiggle around to relieve pressure while sitting in the IKEA chair compared with higher-end chairs. Knowing how important that surface-level butt comfort is to people, we think this is something to consider.

What is it like? It’s solid. Right when you start pulling things out of the box, you’ll notice the reassuring heft of the parts (this being IKEA, assembly is up to you). The materials seem to be of good quality; you get no sense of that cheap faux-luxuriousness you find with many of the chairs at this price at Office Max or wherever else. It’s hard to say how well the Markus will hold up over years of use, but at least you’ll have IKEA’s limited 10-year warranty, a rarity among chairs of this price.

While many office chairs use a series of buttons and levers for greater comfort control, the Acuity intuitively adjusts to your body and shifting posture. The chair automatically modifies lumbar support, as well as angular recline, by adapting to pressure and weight distribution. The large mesh openings also create optimal breathability for better ventilation. For greater flexibility around the office, owners have the option of outfitting the back of the chair with a slip-on leather jacket. This gives the Acuity a more sophisticated look, one better suited for conference rooms and private offices.

Of the almost 360 reviews on Amazon, I only found a couple complaints of parts breaking over time, which is better than all the other mid-back chairs at this price level (and even some more expensive ones, too.) The few negative reviews mostly pertained to assembly. Some said it was a quick 10-minute job , while others said it took an hour or longer and/or required screws of their own to complete.

At the Budget price point, our pick for the Executive Office Chair is the Lorell Executive High-Back Chair. Its mesh back keeps thing breathable and the height adjustable lumbar support gives your lower back the support you need. Note: this chair has a 250 lb weight capacity.  Almost 80% Amazon reviewers gave this chair 4 stars or better with many says that is was comfortable, easy to assemble, and a total bargain.

Unfortunately, even a good chair might not be enough to save you from the problems associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Over the past few years, a huge amount of research has indicated that the central workplace health risk is not in using ill-fitting chairs but in remaining sedentary for long periods of time—whether that’s sitting or standing.1 We outlined the scientific case against sitting at length in our guide to standing desks, but here’s the gist: Recent studies have shown that long periods of not moving put you at higher risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and a handful of forms of cancer. But the good news is that modern task chairs such as the Steelcase Gesture and the Herman Miller Embody take this into consideration and actually encourage you to move while sitting.

On the other side of the coin are some specific things you should avoid. Jenny Pynt, a physiotherapist and the author of A History of Seating 3000 BC to 2000 AD: Function Versus Aesthetics and The Design and Use of Healthy Seating, told us to “avoid chairs that force your upper spine, that part between the shoulder blades, forward. So-called ‘executive’ chairs often do this.” Basically, you want something that’s supporting your back, not sculpting it. The same goes for the lower region. Another common mistake, Pynt warned, is “sitting with the low back maximally arched. This position compresses the joints in the spine, creating pain.”
